Zelda 25th Symphony: Wind Waker Symphonic Movement
I went with a friend to see the LA Symphony concert. We sat up in the first section of the mezzanine. (I ordered the tickets from Spain!) The place was buzzing with all sorts of cosplayers and general fans alike. I was pretty jealous of some of their t-shirts and outfits. There were also tons of demos set up for Skyward Sword, with three areas: Bird Riding, the Sky Temple, and a battle with Lord Ghirahim. We had no time to wait in line, so I could only grab a video. Pretty much EVERYONE chose the Boss Battle over and over, so this was the only Sky Temple playing I could find!
The performance itself was pretty great. I've read other reviews, and I agree the audience was a little annoying. I can see why videos accompanying the songs were a helpful aid, but they turned the crowd into a bunch of howling wolves, cheering full-scale in the middle of a song. On the other hand, some songs meant to be soft and delicate, like Princess Zeda's Theme or the Great Fairy's Fountain, earned almost no applause even after the song had ended, as everyone was thinking "What? Is that it?" Still, I suppose it's fun for everyone to celebrate their nostalgia with fellow fans.
The conductor obviously didn't know much about the Zelda series, but that didn't matter. Some movements, like the Twilight Princess Movement, Gerudo Valley, and the 25th Anniversary Medley (a collection of some of the greatest songs throughout the series), were incredibly well done, while others like the Selected Shorts Suite showed that Nintendo truly knows the series from the inside out.
There were some nice surprises. Koji Kondo appeared at the end with a piano rendition of Grandma's Theme from Wind Waker, and the orchestra treated us to the main theme from Skyward Sword. At the end, we all piled into the lobby to get in line for merchandise. Outside, Nintendo Power was interviewing guests for their next edition. The two guys in matching Zelda shirts who were in front of us when we first entered were being interviewed as we left. Overall, it wasn't perfect, but it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I'm glad I witnessed.
Here's my personal favorite from the show, the Wind Waker Symphonic Movement. Enjoy, and feel free to request!
