This is not a traditional woodwind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon) but I do not play horn or bassoon proficiently enough to record, so I substituted horn for English Horn (same key, one of the rare instruments in F!) and Bass Clarinet for bassoon (similar range!)
This video is a request from one of my Patreon supporters, frogs_theme, who wanted a song from Link’s Awakening! To tell you the truth, Ballad of the Wind Fish was never in my considerations, but after the remake’s re-imagining of the theme, I fell in love with the song all over again!
This video features a brand new instrument on my channel: Bass Clarinet! I figured it wouldn’t be too different from clarinet, in fact I had played it for about 10 minutes before hitting the record button. I definitely still have work to do with tone, but I am so excited to use it in future arrangements. This instrument is going to transform the way I do my chamber arrangements, because it’s the first bass/low-range woodwind instrument I now have in my arsenal.
The re-harm is a bit different in this one, if you (like me) love the original, some parts may sound weird to you! I think that the 7th chords fit the style, though, hope you at least appreciate the uniqueness :^) I also went back and forth constantly between more reverb and less reverb....In the past, I have masked mediocre playing with a bunch of reverb, and this time I thought it would be more authentic if the playing was more "exposed" with less reverb. After tons of back and forth I finally decided on this final version!
This is the first chamber arrangement I’ve ever done that is 100% acoustic — no percussion, sampled instruments, nothing. Very proud of how it turned out!
