Hello everyone! Sooo, this may seem like a bizarre song choice, this song is almost NEVER referenced and I don’t think it’s ever been covered. However, I go waaaay back with this song. I used to use the GTS trade station in Black/White all the time resulting in the song being stuck in my head constantly. Then, it started to become kind of an inside-joke “meme” song with me and some friends at the time. Even when starting my VGM covers, this project never crossed my mind. Well, it’s 2021 and I’ve decided to cover this song, haha!

For the performance, I had a really tricky time pulling off those fast runs. Even though most of the runs are in a simple Eb major, it’s a lot harder than it seems. The notes weren’t as difficult as the timing; the tempo and pulse of my arrangement varies from the original and it was really difficult to emphasize note groupings and line up with the met. Additionally, getting both the oboe and flute (one being my non-primary instrument) to match in style, pitch, and articulation was a challenge.

For the mixing, I probably bounced a dozen drafts until I was happy with the right one (doesn’t this happen all the time to music producers, though?) And man, that oboe cuts through HARD. I can’t believe the fader is set so low, and upon my car speaker test, my laptop speaker test, etc… it is apparent the oboe is just a piercing instrument.

For the arrangement, I relaxed the tempo and style, still maintaining a nice forward-pulse while adapting it to a chamber style. Lots of call and response in the high woodwinds and giving every voice a chance at a melody. I tried to write more bass clarinet melodies, but then where are the BASS VOICINGS? Shoutout to all my low-range musicians who have to endure boring parts, hahaha.
