Hello again, friends! Today I bring you my lyrical rendition of Outset Island. I’ve been kicking ideas for this one around for a couple of months now and it’s cool to finally see it all come together!

It’s nice to do something happy and upbeat for a change, haha. Even my Great Sea cover had a tinge of sadness to it, with Link being separated from Aryll and all. This time around I wanted to make something a bit more carefree.

The process for *making* this cover, however, was anything BUT carefree. It was a lot of work, haha. I’ve been working hard on it for the last two weeks and my initial projection was to have it out around Monday or Tuesday of this week. I had to go way into over time with re-recording guitars and vocals. My project file for this has something like 120 tracks 0_o

It took soooo many vocal takes to get this one. I still have a couple of gripes with it, but I think it’s pretty solid overall. Believe it or not, one of the hardest parts was simply getting the word “we’ll” right when I say “we’ll count the stars over our heads”. For some reason that word at that pitch just doesn’t sit quite right in my range. It’s a tad too high for chest voice and a little too low for falsetto. The final version is still a bit harsh for my liking, but I think it’s acceptable, haha.

I went back and forth on whether I was going to do the whistling part or do a guitar solo instead. I thought that whistling fits well with the carefree mood of the song so I went with that. I’m not a master whistler so hopefully I didn’t rupture your eardrums ; )

I made a couple of last-minute changes to the vocal parts after I recorded the video so there are a couple of things that look a little out of place in the vocal part of the video. I had a little “oooh” part that I sang right after the “we’ll count the stars over our heads” part, but I decided to cut it so now it looks like I’m singing something when there’s no audio, haha. The other thing is I shortened the parts where I say “no worries” and “with the tide”. I thought that by singing the full part like how it is in the original made it sound rushed going into the “we’ll count the…” part. Not sure if that makes sense, but in the video it looks like I’m singing those parts longer than I actually am.

For this cover I finally reunited with my long-lost love, Austin Eruption. He did a phenomenal job on the drum part so go tell him I said thanks and subscribe to his green pants! (https://www.youtube.com/user/bokunoer...)

The lyrics are obviously about Link and Aryll, but I tried to write them in such a way that the perspective could be from either character. I really just wanted the words to harken back simpler times when there was not a care in the world.

While I was writing this I was thinking about how it’s sad that even though Link eventually rescues Aryll and restores peace to Hyrule, life will never be the same as it was before the events of Wind Waker. The great evil might be gone, but there are still adventures to be had and people in need of help. Those lazy days are gone forever.

Sorry, I’m getting a bit introspective here, haha.

Thanks again to my buddy Ian for creating the thumbnail for this video! (https://www.youtube.com/user/wallycha...)

LYRICS

I think of you when the sky is blue
Back to these days we lazed them through
Just you and me and the sand by the sea
Like the gulls on the breeze, no worries

We’ll count the stars over our heads
And never miss another sunset again

I think of you when the sky is blue
Back to these days we lazed them through
And though the sky is grey sometimes
the wind will rise with the tide

We’ll count the stars over our heads
And never miss another sunrise again
