68This is my arrangement of Zelda's Lullaby, from The Legend of Zelda series, arranged for percussion ensemble. This arrangement is mostly based on the Ocarina of Time version of this theme (with inspiration from other versions as well).

Zelda's Lullaby is such a beautiful song and it's about time I finally covered it. I haven't played much from the Zelda series gaming wise, but this song has always stuck with me and is quite possibly my favorite from the franchise.
I wanted to capture the peaceful nature of this song while staying true to its simplicity, so I started with the melody in the bells and warm accompaniment in the marimba/piano. Naturally, it builds as the xylophone comes in and the marimba gets busier. I toyed around with phrasing the triplets/sixteenth notes in the marimba, staying true to the original the first time around while changing it up the second time. The cymbal and triangle help establish forward momentum while the toy piano and piano take over the melody. Finally, the drums come in and the accompaniment gets thicker, just to fade back out after eight measures. The ending recaptures the simplicity from the beginning with slightly altered instrumentation, taking out the piano chords and rolling them on marimba.
The wind chimes and cymbal rolls spread throughout the arrangement are the icing on the cake, connecting one phrase to the next and filling up the space. That's what auxiliary percussion does best in slow pieces like this one and, if there's one thing I'm picky about as an arranger, it's to do the auxiliary parts justice. Okay, there are actually several things I'm picky about, but that point is the most important for this arrangement. :)
