I've been an Independent contractor, but the availability and cost of services rapidly changed due to mounting disability symptoms. No doctors can actually figure what it really is, but every single symptom can be explained by MS (MRI says it's not, which is really unhelpful). The cost of identifying what it actually is also happens to be too high, because I live in a capitalist hellscape.
I've done software development consultations, tutoring for mathematics and computer science, development of application GUI/backend software; I've even been paid to reverse engineer video games. Pay me well enough, and I might do some of those for you.
