1. Creating Napoleon's Empire - France - EU4 M&T Lets Play
My first lets play campaign as France. I start with taking on Napoleon and the First French Empire that dominated Europe in the late 18th early 19th century. The goal of this series is to recreate Napoleon's Empire as best as possible according to the borders from 1812.
The nations that I aim to have as my vassals are the Confederation of the Rhine (or an amalgamation of countries that belong to the border of the Confederation of the Rhine, considering if the Rhine was one country it's liberty desire would be in the hundreds), Naples, Northern Italy and Poland. Presumably when I am finished creating the empire I will finish out the play through by going tall.

Napoleon was born in Corsica on August 15, 1769. He was the fourth child and the third son of Carlo Buonaparte and Maria Letizia, who were minor Italian nobility from Tuscany. Corsica had belonged to the Republic of Genoa since 1284, but the Republic had transferred control over the island to France in 1769, the same year of Napoleon’s birth. When he was nine he moved to the French mainland and enrolled in a religious school before transferring to a military academy at Brienne-le-Chateau in northeastern France. He was an ardent supporter of Corsican independence from France and although he learned French at age 10 he never lost his Corsican accent. He was ridiculed by his peers for his Corsican ethnicity, accent, and inability to speak French quickly. He became reserved and melancholy. He completed his studies at Brienne in 1784 and transferred to the Ecole Militaire in Paris where he trained to become an artillery officer.
Napoleon graduated the academy in 1785 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the First Artillery Regiment of France. He served until the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789 when he traveled back to Corsica where he led a battalion of volunteers that fought against the French occupation of the island. Despite his resistance, he was promoted to captain in the French army in 1792. In 1793 he was appointed artillery commander of the republican forces at the Siege of Toulon. He helped lead to the capture of the city and was placed in charge of the artillery of Frances army in Italy. He helped develop plans to capture Sardinia from the Kingdom of Sardinia which fought against France in the War of the First Coalition.
In 1795 he was instrumental in defending Paris from a royalist rebellion that had broken out. This earned him much fame and fortune, and the new government, the Directory, promoted him to Commander of the Interior and gave him command of the Army of Italy. Napoleon then went on campaign in Italy. In two weeks he knocked the Kingdom of Sardinia out of the war and won several military victories against the Austrians, who lost control of their territories in Italy. Napoleon then marched on the Austrian mainland and after a series of victories forced them to sue for peace. France was given control of Austria’s Italian possessions and Austria’s possessions in the Low Countries, which was the territories near the Netherlands to the north of France. Napoleon then marched on and conquered Venice. During the campaign Napoleon’s army had captured 150,000 prisoners, 540 cannons, and 170 standards. During the campaign his army also looted innumerable wealth from Italy.
After the Italian campaign, Napoleon moved onto Egypt. It was decided that France could not defeat Britain on the high seas yet, so they decided to focus on conquering Egypt to weaken Britain’s access to their colonies in India. Napoleon landed in Egypt in 1798 with 25,000 men after eluding the British fleet. Napoleon defeated the ruling Mameluks and set up his own government in Egypt. On August 1 the British destroyed the entire French fleet in the Battle of the Nile. Napoleon took his army away from Egypt and traveled north to Damascus. After a failed campaign in the Levant he headed back to Cairo.
After learning that France had suffered a series of military defeats in the war of the second coalition, he sailed back to Paris. Napoleon was elected to the French Consulate, which was effectively a dictatorship in all but name. Five years later he would be elected Emperor of the Romans.
