In a sense, rivals are competitors–two people constantly fighting against one another hoping to see the other fail, but it really comes down to just how personal it feels. It means that you’re not just fighting to win, you’re fighting to make sure the other guy loses. We’ve seen classic rivalries in all forms of media, but there’s something uniquely engaging about the kind you see in video games. Perhaps it’s the way that characters are an extension of the player, and when their relationships in the story are echoed by the gameplay it feels personal for us as well.
