And while everyone always refers to Disney movies in this regard, television deserves a special mention. Hand-drawn animation had become cheap enough that cartoons could be produced consistently year after year, and there was something about the way characters were sketched that made them resemble photorealistic humans.
Spider-Man: The Animated Series was one of the top shows to come out of this period. Boasting a gorgeous cell-shaded art style that resembled the comics at the time, it attempted to adopt specific storylines whilst appealing to both kids and adults.
