Sad to say, climate change, hunting and pollution threaten the lives of many species in our world. So, it’s no wonder to see how many people are trying to ensure that we don’t lose them. But with nature, hope is always alive and we don’t have to look to the stars for aliens to fill up their space because we discover new species every day in our oceans. So on that note, I’ll be introducing you to ten of the most bizarre recently discovered species in the world. Stick with me all the way till the #1. That entry is just out of this world!

Number 10: The Headless Chicken Sea Monster

Alright. I know the name sounds a little bit petrifying and interesting. But despite being named that way, this animal species is actually some kind of sea cucumber. One that has only been seen just one time in recorded history before 2018. That one time was in the Gulf of Mexico. As such, this species is not only new; it’s also among the rarest of the rare. Despite its elusive nature, a group of researchers recently saw it on the southwestern corner of Antarctica in a region long past where the sun rays can penetrate. On sighting it, the scientists were floored by its unusual physique which looks almost like a decapitated chicken primed for roasting. As such, they named it the headless chicken monster. Other people also call it the swimming sea cucumber or the Spanish dancer. And even though that name sounds quite unrelatable, this animal does move upward with its wing-like fins, making it look as if it’s flying. Even with that, it tries to stay as close as it can to the bottom of the ocean.

Number 9: The Cirrhilabrus Wakanda

I’m pretty sure I just butchered that name. But hey, this fish is called Wakanda as in the African Marvel Kingdom in layman language. So, let me talk about this little cutie a bit more, even though the Wakanda Kingdom itself might not be a real place. Anyway, the Wakanda fish, or the Vibranium fairy wrasses as scientists call it, belongs to a genus of fish named the fairy wrasse. Although, several DNA and morphology analyses later revealed that this very fish with a yellow head and dazzling deep purple fins is a new species entirely. It was first discovered in 2019 at about 260 feet below the Indian Ocean very close to Tanzania. In this part of the ocean, reefs are so secretive and dark that many experts call it the “twilight zone.” Everything here is isolated and unexplored just like the secretive Wakanda nation in Marvel comics. Hence, the name of the fish. Experts who found the Wakanda fish had to use special instruments to see it. But the greater mystery lies in how it was able to maintain its colour, unlike most fish, at such depths. Cool, don't you think?

Number 8: The ANDRILL Anemone

I must warn you to expect to see many marine animals on this list. And that's because the bottom of the ocean is one perfect place to find the strange and the unknown. At least, someone once said we probably know less about it than we do of outer space. While taking that remark to heart, a group of researchers under the Antarctic Geological Drilling Program (ANDRILL) set out in the southern hemisphere to find new species underwater. In 2010, what they found was one tough cookie - a species of sea anemone that lives upside down. Interestingly still, they also live burrowed within the largest ice shelf in Antarctica! They’re somewhat small with the largest of them not more than one inch in length. Yet, they feature around 20 to 24 tentacles on their bodies and can expand close to 4 times their original length when relaxed. As of this moment, we don’t know about what they eat, how they reproduce or even how they burrow into the ice with their soft-bodies. But let’s just cross our fingers and give the science brainiacs some more time to do their thing.

Number 7: The Leaf-tailed Gecko

Let’s dive out of the ocean floor for now and move to Australia where almost everything is hellbent on eating you. There, you will find a species of geckos whose brown-coloured tails look just like dried leaves. The experts who found them on top of Cape Melville in 2013 believed that they have been isolated for millions of years while looking relatively the same. From their speculations,
