152There are so many canceled and lost games in Nintendo’s library. Who knew that so many of these games belonged to the Mario franchise? Usually due to a lack of funding or running out of time, canceled games are often victims of poor circumstances. Today we’re looking at 10

Given that several Mario titles release in just a year, it’s easy to imagine that many of these games are canceled or simply forgotten. Nintendo’s always been protective of their major IPs, which may be one
of the biggest contributing factors to canceled games. Especially after
the Zelda CD-i games and Mario Hotel. While this is for the best, it’s fun to imagine what some devs could brew up for a Mario adventure. Some of Mario’s best-received games have been games that venture outside of the platformer genre. For example, Super Mario RPG, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and Mario Kart. That makes it all the more exciting to see
devs who considered making a Mario volleyball game or Mario Football game. It would be fun to see Nintendo keep experimenting with the Mario formula to keep creating memorable experiences.
Even if games are lost or canceled, we see qualities from these games resurface in various ways. You could say that the realistic locations that were planned to be present in Mario Takes America is what inspired Odyssey’s New Donk City. It’s a long shot, sure, but it’s exciting that these old games can still have an influence on the future of the series. Hopefully, we’ll continue to see Nintendo reshape old ideas into new and fun gameplay mechanics.
