Whether it’s the fun 3D platforming in Super Mario Galaxy or the engaging turn-based combat in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, everyone can find a Mario game they love. However, Mario isn’t always a huge success. Plenty of games exist in Mario’s history that have been hated and forgotten.
Today, we look into the Top 10 Worst Super Mario Games. This list relies on online reviews and review scores for each Mario game. We do our best to examine the flaws in each Mario game and what contributed to the low reception. Many of these games have been widely hated for some time and it can be difficult to recall what started that hate in the first place. Especially as the quality of Mario games has gone up over time.
It’s interesting to look back on earlier games given Nintendo’s growth and development. Many people are quick to change their opinion on a game after significant time has passed. For instance, when Super Mario: 3D World first released, the game was met with massive amounts of hate. Many were disappointed by the latest 3D Mario game, as they expected a game more similar to Super Mario 64. However, after the release of Super Mario Odyssey, people were given the opportunity to re-evaluate their opinion on 3D World.
When Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury released, the game was not massively hated like it was at the original release. There’s speculation that fans were up in arms due to the belief that 3D World was the next big mainline 3D Mario game. The release of Odyssey satisfied fans looking for the traditional 3D Mario experience, allowing them to look back at 3D World with warmth rather than disdain.
