Storefronts such as Steam and the Nintendo Game Store bring us an easy and convenient way to buy games. They compile thousands of them into a single place so that we can purchase and download them at the click of a button. What more could we possibly ask for? Well, something a bit more permanent, to be honest. In light of the near-closure of the PlayStation 3 and Vita stores – and the actual closure of the PSP store – it’s becoming more apparent just how easily we can lose access to huge chunks of gaming history. And yet, this was far from the first such instance. We’ve already lost a number of game distribution services, many of which took their own exclusives and features with them when they went. Some are well known and some we’re honestly only learning about for the first time, but each of them represents some small slice of gaming history that has slipped irrevocably into the past.
