1. Go to a level where a Golden Skull is easy to obtain and close to the beginning of the level (here, World 4 Stage 3 = Stage 4-3 Dangerous Exit then World 2 Stage 5 = Stage 2-5 Flaming Corridors).
2. Get the skull.
3. Wait for the 1up to appear and the life counter to add your life.
4. Press pause.
5. Select World map.
6. Repeat over and over until you are happy with the number of lives you have.

Please note that choosing Retry Stage removes one life and would thus defeat the purpose of this trick. You have to go back to the map for the new life to stay.
