With a show called “Sex Education” it’s no surprise there were a lot of explicit and often embarrassing scenes for the actors to perform for the camera’s. While the show is a comedy, it doesn’t shy away from the realities of intimacy and offers a really honest look at how young people navigate learning about and participating in intimacy for the first time. This coming-of-age story is filled with lots of laughs, lessons and ultimately a whole lot of sensual scenes.
While the explicit moments between characters could turn out to be very awkward when filming, having intimacy coordinator Ita O’Brien on set made the process much easier and more approachable. The actors were able to feel safe and able to move through the scenes as if they were a choreographed dance, rather than an awkward and intimate scene being captured for eyes across the world to see.
Filming solo pleasure scenes wasn't any easier - in fact for Asa Butterfield and Aimee Lou Wood these times on set were even more awkward since they didn’t have another actor to play off it. In one case Butterfield was given a male appendage prop to help him out but it just made it even more awkward.
Ncuti Gatwa had some messy time on set that involved a whole lot of literal banas. At one point they were regurgitated on him and at another, he used them to demonstrate a very r-rated act.
The embarrassment didn’t end when filming wrapped - each actor had to have some very up front conversations with their parents about what to expect when watching the show - let’s just say those conversations may have been even more awkward than performing all that intimacy on screen!
