In the late 1970s, it seems that toy company Shinsei wanted to branch away from solely making high quality industrial vehicles, and get in on the lucrative Super Robot market. Valcan-1 is fairly typical of Japanese Super Robots of the era, complete with a head that looks somewhere between an alien race and an ancient warrior’s armour. What is impressive about Shinsei’s model Valcan-1, though, is the amount of diecast metal in his construction, and he’s very heavy. Valcan’s head is made of orange-painted metal, and has a metallic blue plastic insert incorporating his eyes and robot brain, with a clear dome over the top. His torso is constructed from front and rear diecast sections painted metallic green, with a blue chrome plastic insert. His upper legs are in plated metal, and are attached to very chunky lower legs and feet which are painted orange. His arms are plated metal, with red plastic hands. He has a foil ‘atomic’ symbol on his chest, and a nameplate on his upper back.

Valcan-1 has plenty of moving parts; his head rotates, his shoulders swing upwards, and his hip and knee joints are articulated. But his most exciting action feature is one very common on Super Alloy robots: spring loaded flying fists! Pushing the red buttons below his shoulders causes his fists to fly off at the elbow with quite considerable force. And to make it even more fun, there are two additional, interchangeable hands included: one shaped like an axe, and another with a spinning buzz-saw blade!
