198X follows an unnamed protagonist, The Kid, who dreams of escaping his boring suburban neighbourhood and living in the city. The pull of adulthood plagues The Kid’s mind and he finds an escape through the local arcade. The story is told beautifully through the 16-bit visuals and soothing narration and really gets you through the mind of The Kid. The five games that the protagonist plays also start to seep in the personal dilemmas he’s going through, which really provides a synergy between gameplay and story.
