アニメ調グラフィックのキャラクターデザインが特徴の対戦格闘ゲーム。弱・中・強攻撃の3ボタンながらレバーと複数ボタンにより「マジックブースト」「マジックブレイク」様々な特殊動作が繰り出せる。特に空中でも使うことのできる吹っ飛ばし攻撃（フォースアタック）を絡めた連続技は自由度が高く、本作の大きな魅力となっている。ゲームの難易度は中ボスから急激に上昇し、最終ボスのシャドウガイストは格闘ゲーム中でも屈指の強さを誇る。なお、本作にはASURAの剣を探索するという物語があるのだが、ゲームクリア後のデモではほとんど触れられず、何事もなかったかのように続編「アシュラバスター」へと続く。
