Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is an Action-Adventure game developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix which is a title far separate and distinct from the more well-known Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film franchise counterpart. In this game, you will be introduced to the Five (5) members of the “heroes-for-hire” Guardians of the Galaxy, namely: the team’s leader Peter Quill A.K.A. Starlord (the player character); Gamora, the so-called “deadliest woman in the galaxy” and adopted daughter of Thanos; Rocket Raccoon, a former bounty hunter whose expertise are in the mechanic side of things; Groot, Rocket’s partner in their bounty hunter days and the last of his species as a Flora Colossus; and Drax the Destroyer, famed in the galaxy as the killer of Thanos. You will be joining this ragtag group of individuals in their action-packed (and mostly hilarious) adventure involving going mainly against the Universal Church of Truth led by Grand Unifier Raker which all started from a simple bet between friends.

The game received generally favorable reviews (except the cloud version in Switch due to performance issues and bugs) among critics, garnering scores of 78 (PC), 80 (PS5), 58 (Switch), and 84 (XSXS) which led to the game receiving 14 Game of the Year Awards from gaming media outlets and fan voting. On the game’s strengths, the story, characters and music received critical acclaim. The story for having a strong plotline which is a journey of camaraderie among chaotic friends which are both funny and enjoyable; and can also be sad and emotional during its intimate moments. The branching storyline is also praised as you listening to the story and banter will be rewarded for your decisions. On the character side, all of the characters were praised, each one had a nice balance of character developments with each critics singling out each of their favorite character arc and background. The music was likewise generally praised which applied licensed tracks from the 80s. On the game’s weaknesses, its battle and puzzle mechanics were criticized. The battle, despite its numerous combination of systems, were still considered simple and its enemies just a bunch of meat tanks. On the other hand, the puzzles were criticized to be likewise simple and easy to accomplish which is more than a hassle than fun.

As for me, this game was my favorite and personal Game of the Year in 2021. I love almost everything in this game. From its great story which has a nice balance of comedy, action and drama; the great banters between its loveable characters; from each of their character developments which will interest from start to end; and the music that back-ups it up during its most intense and calming moments. In my opinion, this aspects of the game is included among my top all-time in gaming. Unlike the critics, I found the simple battle mechanics to be decent. Although it did not gave anything revolutionary, it gave me nostalgia in ARPGs since it is similar to the well-known Dragon Age/Mass Effect series. The combos of each characters skills are also nice and the chaos you see on the screen is great for me. However, what I found to be a bummer to this game is the puzzle sections. None are really complicated and just you ordering each of the Guardians which ones who can do it will answer yes to you and those who do not know what to do will reject you. Meaning, the puzzles are just a trial and error thing. Although, the banters during this events are funny. Overall, a highly recommended game to everyone, especially those who like games with great quality stories, funny banters and cast of characters. Enjoy the walkthrough!!!
