2.01 - "The Best Games (Sorted By Console) Pt. 4 – Game Boy Advance" - The Vagabond Gamecast

The Game Boy Advance is a special little nostalgia machine. In an era where games were increasingly becoming 3D – suddenly we had access to great SNES-like titles in the palm of our hands. There were lots of older titles that got ports to this little beast, but lots of reimaginings as well. This cartridge based, portable, console is definitely a highlight in the world of gaming. If you’re too eager to make your way through the audio itself, be sure to read inside to see some of our highlights.
* Before we get into the “meat” we have a bit of a catch-up. Titles we discuss here include the wonderful Goose sim Untitled Goose Game, a great little pc game called Gunpoint, and an SNES game Matt’s visiting with called E.V.O.: Search for Eden – a title developed by Almanic Corporation and published by Enix. Though Steve derailed it, it’s also worth looking into King Arthur’s World on SNES and the indie game inspired by it called King Arthur’s Gold.
* at 6:00, we spend a moment discussing our general mood around the length of games and playing variety when we game.
* at 14:00 Steve gets into the games he’s into at the moment. These include the guitar (no joke, you actually play your real guitar via a cable into the game) via Rocksmith 2014 as well as the PS2 Final Fantasy shooter game Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII.
* at 14:50 the discussion of DoC:FFVII unfortunately involves the sad telling of the fate of Steve’s PS2. But, the fortunate thing is, if you too have a broken PS2, it may be possible for it to continue it’s life as the core of a PS2 emulator known as PCSX2
* at 24:50 the discussion turns to the Paper Mario franchise
* at 27:08 Matt deviates to talk about Snatcher and the PC Engine.
* at 30:30 we finally get to the topic at hand. The Game Boy Advance.
* at 33:00 we mention Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles a game for the Game Cube which required a Game Boy Advance for each person in order to play multiplayer.
* at 36:55 we get into the world of eBay piracy and the GBA – while Steve mentions that the GBA erased pirated game data… this is likely incorrect. It’s more likely that it was playing the pirated games on a DS that was causing the data erasure.
* at 40:30 we touch on game packaging. The wonderful era in which games still had manuals.
* at 44:25 Matt touches on his favourite game on the console: Mario vs. Donkey Kong.
* at 46:00 we discuss the disappointing Final Fantasy Tactics: Advance.
* at 52:00 we get into the more enjoyable games on the system. Touching on Final Fantasy IV Advance, and Metroid Zero Mission, and one that Matt, who speaks Japanese, associates with the GBA: Ace Attorney. Ace Attorney wasn’t localized in English until Nintendo DS.
