Shoppers have long associated the Subaru Impreza with reliability, but they can now add style, safety and comfort to the list. Introducing the all-new 2017 Subaru Impreza. We like that Subaru went all-in on the redesign, giving the Impreza a sleeker look, and giving drivers a more engaging experience from behind the wheel.
The Impreza is offered in four trim levels and two body styles. Our tester was the 2.0i sport sedan, but it also comes in a versatile 5-door version.
All models are outfitted with all-wheel drive and a reworked 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers impressive gas mileage. The downside: This car is no WRX, but power is still adequate at 152 horsepower. The Impreza handles well thanks to torque vectoring all-wheel drive and a sport suspension. It feels connected to the road without being overly noisy or bumpy. However, some may find the steering too sensitive, and that may take time to get used to.
Inside, the spacious cabin feels sporty thanks to sleek finishes, a well-designed center stack and red stitching throughout. Seats look good and feel great, even on long roadtrips, but we wish there was some type of lumbar support in the driver's seat. In the back row, there's plenty of legroom, so your co-workers won't mind when it's your turn to drive to lunch. And we like the large rear door opening -- it's helpful if you're hoisting kids into a booster or car seat. There's also access to the trunk through an available 60/40-split folding seat.
Regarding tech, the new Starlink multi-media system is easier to use, and we love the new Apple Carplay and Android Auto integration. And you can also feel good about letting your teen driver borrow the car for a few hours thanks to Subaru's Eyesight technology. Our tester's package included several sought-after safety features, including adaptive cruise control, emergency auto braking and reverse auto braking.
It's no surprise that the Impreza earned excellent crash safety test scores, including a Top Safety Pick Plus rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Overall, we think these improvements will only broaden the brand's appeal beyond the usual Subaru enthusiasts. With advance driving dynamics, good looks and creature comforts, the 2017 Subaru Impreza has evolved from a reliable car into a downright fun car to own.
