Mazda’s CX-5 crossover has been so well received that Mazda decided to build a smaller version. The CX-3 compact crossover debuted in 2016 and returns for 2018 with improvements to its handling, cabin and safety that our reviewer found impressive and enjoyable. A completely redesigned suspension and Mazda’s G Vectoring Control give the CX-3 remarkable handling, and a low-speed emergency braking system and head-up display add safety and convenience. Unfortunately, the CX-3 does not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
All CX-3s use a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 146 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, and while those numbers aren’t impressive, they’ll get the car up to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds, which is quick for the segment. That engine works with a 6-speed automatic to deliver power to the front or all four wheels, with AWD adding $1,250 to the cost of each trim. Mileage for front-wheel-drive trims is 29 mpg city, 34 highway, 31 combined, and all-wheel-drive trims get 27, 32, 29.
