135In the automotive world they call it white space, and there's little more lucrative right now than the midsize SUV segment. Welcome, then, the 2018 Range Rover Velar, the British company's fourth model in its line-up, and Jaguar Land Rover's interpretation of the avant garde SUV.
Bigger than the Evoque, and just a little smaller than the Range Rover Sport, the Velar resurrects a nameplate with some serious history. Land Rover used it on the first Range Rover prototypes five decades ago. Now, it's back to reboot the traditional automaker for a new, younger audience.
Though it shares the same platform as Jaguar's F-PACE there's no mistaking the Velar as anything other than a Range Rover. It's arguably the company's most successful design in years. Superfluous detailing is smoothed away in favor of bold lines and eye-pleasing proportions.
