During the Industry Pool at the Nürburgring I have filmed the 2020 BMW X5M testing on track.

Ever since the early 2010s, the X5 line of BMW SUV has had its own dedicated M version. The high-performance tweaks made to the car have made the model one of the most successful and sought after on the market, and prompted the Germans to continue and create a new generation.

In October 2019, the third version of the X5 M line was born, bringing the same levels of tuning we’re used to seeing, and slightly better performances thanks to all the extra work that went into the engine.

Scheduled to be introduced to the public for the first time at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2019, the new X5 M will be launched on the market in 2020 alongside the Competition variant.

The already large proportions of the X5 get a whole new dimension when the M division does its magic. Although not extensive, and mostly intended to help optimize cooling, air supply and aerodynamics, the M parts fitted on the SUV contribute to making it look unmistakably high-performance of the road.

At the front, the parts that have been revised or replaced by M are the carmaker’s telltale kidney grille, which now comes with double bars, and the M gills on the front side panels. The rear has been fitted with a spoiler and an apron with diffusers, but also with a new exhaust system with two sets of twin tailpipes.

For the Competition version of the X5 M, the carmaker fitted different-size wheels. At the front, they are 21-inches in diameter, while at the rear there’re one inch larger. Also, specific design elements set the Competition apart even more.

For the first time in the X5 M range, the Individual paint finish is available for the exterior.

Based on the G05 X5 introduced by the German carmaker back in 2018, the new M flavor brings all the interior appointments of the base car and adds a few extra touches to become one of the best cars in its segment.

The driver is seated high above the ground, in M multifunction seats, and is surrounded by a unique design of the cockpit, covered in leather spread throughout. There are differences between the regular M and the Competition here as well, mostly centered around the type of leather and other materials used.

Just as its regular sibling, the X5 M comes with a luggage capacity of 645 liters, but that can be increased by folding the rear seats to 1,860 liters.

M has made all the efforts to turn all the gadgets usually found in the X5 into incredible tools for assessing performance. Starting with the head-up display that shows M-specific readouts and ending with the car’s infotainment screen, all the hardware works to make the driving experience as unique as possible.

Furthermore, there are a lot of ways of setting the car’s systems to the desired values so that the SUV could perform as expected. By using a variety of buttons, including the ones on the steering wheel, the settings of the engine, dampers, steering, M xDrive, and braking system can be changed.

When the car is set in the M mode, the driver assistance systems, instrument display, and head-up display can be configured separately.

As a bonus, the X5 M ships with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional complete with navigation system and the carmaker’s voice-controlled personal assistant.

All of the exterior and interior changes made to the X5 M are meant to be telltale signs of the monster engine hiding under the hood. Just like when it comes to its X6 M sibling, this SUV is powered by a high-revving 4.4-liter V8 that’s more powerful than ever before.

Using specific techniques and a lot of testing performed at the Miramas and Arjeplog facilities and on the Nürburgring track, M engineers managed to tune the engine into delivering 25 hp more than in the previous generation, and even 50 hp more for the Competition.

The entire troop of 600 hp of the X5 M (625 hp for the Competition) is controlled via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and is sent to the road through the xDrive all wheel-drive system.

The full power of the engine helps the X5 M reach 62 mph from a standstill in 3.9 seconds (3.8 seconds for the Competition), which is 0.4 seconds faster than before. This is while needing only 12.8 liters of fuel to cover a distance of 100 km (22.1 mpg).

The new X5 M and X5 M Competition will be out on their first public viewing at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Market launch is however scheduled for April 2020, when the car will hit the road alongside the X6 M.
