2021 HYUNDAI i20 N CONTINUOUS TESTING AT THE NÜRBURGRING
During the Industry Pool at the Nürburgring I have filmed the 2021 Hyundai i20 N continuous testing on track.
Hyundai i20 N is Hyundai’s first supermini-sized hot hatch. It follows on from the hugely successful i30 N (which has recently been updated for 2021) and is shaping up to give well-established alternatives, such as the Ford Fiesta ST and Volkswagen Polo GTi, a serious run for their money.
The all-new, third-generation i20 was launched earlier in 2020, featuring a much more angular, aggressive look than the previous model. The i20 N gains extra sporty features that crank the aggression up a few notches, inspired by both the Hyundai i30 N and the firm’s hugely successful World Rally Championship winning cars.
The front grille features a chequered flag pattern and there’s a lip spoiler below the bumper. Unique side skirts lead to a redesigned rear bumper with a faux-diffuser and central triangular fog light. A big spoiler above the rear window helps press the car into the road at high speed, improving stability.
The front lip spoiler, side skirts and lower rear bumper are picked out in signature Tomato Red – just like on the i30 N. There’s a choice of six body colours, most of them available with an optional black roof. Other sporty design elements include LED headlights, darkened brake lights, N-branded brake calipers a few N badges.
The Hyundai i20 N is powered by a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine producing 204hp and 270Nm of torque. That isn’t quite as much as the 2.0-litre turbocharged i30 N (its 2.0-litre engine produces up to 280hp and 392Nm of torque with the optional Performance Pack fitted) but it’ll still sprint from 0-62mph in 6.7s and on to a top speed of 143mph. These numbers place the i20 N in the same performance ballpark as the Fiesta ST and Polo GTi.
The power goes to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox while a launch control system should help it make a quick getaway.
The Hyundai i20 N sits 10mm closer to the road than the standard i20 thanks to its stiffened, lowered suspension. Hyundai has also added what it calls the N Corner Carving Differential – a limited-slip differential that increases grip in corners. The front brakes are also 40mm larger than in the standard i20 for greater stopping power.
There’s also the N Grin Control System (yes, that’s its real name) with five driving modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, N and N Custom. The first four modes tweak the settings for the engine, stability control, exhaust sound and steering while N Custom lets you program your own mode. You can access your favourite setup through ‘N’ button on the steering wheel.
The i20 N shares its interior with other i20 models, but it has been spruced-up with a set of unique sports seats, an N steering wheel, gear knob and metal pedals, and blue trim pieces. A digital instrument display and 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system come as standard, both with i20 N-specific graphics including a lap timer and acceleration timer.
The infotainment system is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and comes with Hyundai’s own on-line services. A comprehensive suite of driver and safety aids comes as standard, too, including automatic emergency braking and blind-spot warning.
The i20 N goes on sale in spring 2021. Hyundai hasn’t announced how much it’ll cost, but expect to hand over between £20,000 and £25,000 to park one on your drive. For comparison, you can buy a Ford Fiesta ST for around £23,000 or a Hyundai i30 N (without the optional performance pack) for a little over £26,000.
