Practicality is a hallmark of the Subaru Forester, and the best-selling SUV is expected to receive some significant updates for the 2022 model year. Boasting a spacious interior, excellent visibility, and a smooth ride, this compact SUV is a strong contender in its segment. Like most other Subarus, the Forester comes standard with AWD. So how will the 2022 Forester attract customers away from the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V? Here's what we expect from the updated model.

New Design, Inside and Out
An updated Japanese-spec Forester previews changes we might see here in the U.S. The 2022 Forester in Japan gets a tweaked exterior design with a taller grille and bolder headlights. Paint color options have been expanded to include new shades of green and bronze (though again, we'll see what Subaru brings to the U.S. ). Inside the cabin, the Japanese-spec Forester offers a selection of seat designs including waterproof seats, synthetic microfiber/leather seats, and genuine Nappa leather seats. Could a 2022 Subaru Forester Onyx edition be part of the trim lineup? It's a distinct possibility, now that the Outback and Ascent offer an Onyx option.

The Forester will likely receive a Wilderness trim at some point. Following in the footsteps of the Outback Wilderness, a 2022 Forester Wilderness could receive increased ground clearance, a beefier suspension, and bolder exterior styling.
Safety
We expect the 2022 Forester to receive Subaru's next-generation EyeSight safety system. If it gets the same updates as the Japanese-spec model, the 2022 Forester will be able to recognize different traffic situations more accurately thanks to improved camera technology with an expanded field of view.

Standard EyeSight safety features should include automatic emergency braking, lane departure and sway warming, and adaptive cruise control with lane centering. Already, the 2021 Forester is a 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and has a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars).
