Creating the centaurs was a complicated process, as they have a human body on top of a horse, requiring many different parts to make it look real. The Art Department created maquettes or sculptures, which were then scanned and turned into a life-size version on the computer. The models were then painted, with lovely detail such as veins and coloration, before hair was added to give them a touch of realism. The centaurs have their own language, and the two centaurs had to have voice training to speak it like that. There were hundreds of blend shapes or facial expressions that had to be sculpted and animated for each centaur. To make the facial expressions look real, two actors were used to capture their performances, which were then matched to the centaurs. The tricky part was translating the human facial expressions into a more equine face, but the filmmakers were able to do it with the help of video cameras and tracking dots. Overall, the making of the centaurs in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix required a massive amount of work and attention to detail, but the result was a group of creatures that felt real and believable in the wizarding world.
