A bad DM an can really ruin a good D&D campaign. By bad dungeon master what I means is a DM that doesn't let his players participate in the story and game.

Hello Nerdarchy!

I'm a new DM running three new players through a published adventure(Princes of the Apocalypse). I'm struggling to balance combat in a way that is interesting, but not fatal.

They're about to reach level three, and are not likely to pick up a fourth player any time soon. What can I do to either coach the party toward covering more roles/being more effective or tune the combat to fit their characters' archetypes?

Currently:
Rogue (dead-set on being sneaky as heck)
Bard (has been hinting he would like to re-roll)
Warlock (struggling on what to do in combat)
