(3/3) OpenAL implementation audio quality comparison: Realtek chip
Three more tests, all using the Realtek ALC892 integrated sound chip. None of these are EAX 3 capable, thus EAX was not heard in any.
0:00 – The Realtek OpenAL implementation (rtk_oal.dll) taken from Realtek's 3D SoundBack application (a sort of alternative to Creative ALchemy, emulates up to EAX 2.0). It seems to add reverb to everything, even though I have environment set to none in the control panel.
9:12 – OpenAL Soft (sof_oal.dll) with default HRTF applied (head-related transfer function, equivalent to CMSS-3D or headphone surround virtualisation). Any differences with the OpenAL Soft test in the previous test should be due to that, since it runs entirely in software.
17:43 – OpenAL to DirectSound3D wrapper (wrap_oal.dll) + Creative ALchemy (DirectSound3D to OpenAL wrapper) + Host OpenAL (Sens_oal.dll) backend, disguised as the native Creative OpenAL implementation (ct_oal.dll). This is a complicated path that makes it so that OpenAL calls are translated to DirectSound3D, then back to OpenAL. The OpenAL capability viewer shows it as having EAX 5 support, but the game disables EAX for it anyway (or perhaps it's using "Generic Software" that shows only EAX 2 support).
