A playthrough of Nintendo's 2011 action-platformer for the Nintendo 3DS, 3D Classics: Kid Icarus.

This remake of Kid Icarus (   • Kid Icarus (NES) Playthrough  ) was part of Nintendo's 3D Classics line that spruced up some NES hits of yesteryear with fancy stereoscopic 3D effects and tweaks to the graphics and gameplay. 3D Classics: Kid Icarus is based on the 1986 Famicom Disk System version of the game, so it doesn't reflect many of the changes that were made for the 1987 NES release.

In the FDS version:

-The music and sound effects make use of the FDS's wavetable channel

-You are given three save slots, and your progress is automatically saved between stages

-Your performance dictates which ending you'll see, and a couple of the endings are different

The remake brings with it a few nifty tricks of its own:

-The flat color backgrounds have been replaced by full-color images, some featuring multiple layers of parallax scrolling, and the 3D presentation gives everything a convincing sense of depth that doesn't distract from the gameplay

-There's a high score screen

-The slowdown and flicker have been eliminated

-Pit can now shoot through certain platforms

-The "custom" control option enables several quality-of-life improvements: you can autofire by holding B, slow your falling speed by holding A, jump while aiming upward, and Pit's momentum has been toned down

The tweaks do a nice job of tightening things up without sacrificing the feel of the original game. Even in 3D, it's still Kid Icarus, and it's still great.
