Donkey Kong Country ( • Donkey Kong Country (SNES) Playthrough - N... ) was the world's best-selling console game of 1994 by a massive margin, moving more than twice as many units as Sega's Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles did combined. Diddy's Kong Quest had some sizable shoes to fill when it released a mere twelve months later.
With the novelty of prerendered graphics having worn off, Rare needed to meaningfully push the gameplay forward for this pirate-themed sequel to land with any impact, and they did. The stage design is more expansive and better varied, the controls are more fluid and responsive, and Dixie's helicopter ponytail provides a fun way to get around the many vertically-oriented level layouts. There's also more game to play this time, being about half again the length of its predecessor, and it's packed to the gills with secrets to search out.
Big improvements were made in other areas, too. As impressive as DKC was, DKC2 again raised the bar for graphics and sound on the SNES. The team's experience with their SGI workstations is clear in the dramatic improvements seen in the overall level of detail, animation, and use of color, and David Wise again created one of the best soundtracks to ever grace a cartridge-based game.
Though it only sold half of what DKC did, five million copies was still enough to make DKC2 the sixth best-selling game in the SNES library, cementing its status as a stone-cold classic. Rare was a world-class powerhouse in the 2D era, and few games demonstrated their skill and passion better than Diddy's Kong Quest. To think that they pulled this off in a matter of months, not years!
