3D Classics: Urban Champion (3DS) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
416A playthrough of Nintendo's 2011 beat 'em up for the Nintendo 3DS, 3D Classics: Urban Champion.
Following up on my upload of the 1985 NES version of Urban Champion (https://youtu.be/PzPrqpFVewU ), I thought I'd show off this odd variant that was made available exclusively through the 3DS eShop. It was the second NES game featured in Nintendo's 3D Classics line, following an enhanced version of Excitebike that had been released a few months earlier.
Urban Champion is a simple game, and it plays the same here as it did in the mid-1980s on 8-bit hardware. The appeal of this updated version lies in the gratuitous way it shows off the 3DS's stereoscopic 3D display. In addition to adding perceived depth to the pixel graphics, the screen also pans back and forth to show the action from different camera angles. Since the sprites and backgrounds are recreated with a faux voxel-style aesthetic, the entire game looks like an animated Lego diorama spruced up with luxury-grade parallax scrolling. I love it.
Urban Champion might not be the classic that Nintendo wishes it to be, but for me, the face-lift was cool enough to draw me back into this primitive fighting game just one more time.
