Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom is an Action RPG developed by Level-5 and published by Bandai Namco. Although sharing the same settings and world of the first title, the game tells a new and independent story which narrates the quest of young king Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum in building his kingdom after being usurped from his previous castle. Accompanying him in this pursuit is Roland Crane, an old president who was mysteriously teleported in his younger version from his world into the world of Ni no Kuni. Together, these two individuals shall work together in making a kingdom where everyone can be happy and to find the answers of Roland’s existence in the world.

Unlike its predecessor which gameplay focuses on capturing monsters, this game on the other hand adopted a new gameplay mechanic which is more focused in hack and slash action that is seen now in modern RPGs. In addition, the game added the Higgledies which acts as your support during battles which was compared to the game Pikmin and skirmish battles. Although still a decent score, the game earned lesser game critic score of 84 (in PS4) and 81 (in PC) when compared to the first title. Praise was given to its improved action oriented battles and the addition of the Higgledies while maintaining the core strengths of the franchise. However, criticisms were focused on its basic story, reused dungeon appearances, few enemy designs, easy difficulty and bad voice acting. Regardless, it is still one of the best action JRPGs released during 2018.

For me, I did not like the change of the gameplay. I enjoyed the monster hunting mechanic of the first game. However, I liked the addition of the Higgledies in the game as well as the skirmish battles (Although I will also agree that this mechanic needs more improvement). The story was pretty ok for me, it is classy, simple and easy to understand and was improved by its good cast of characters. The thing that I most hated on the game though is its re-used dungeon designs, all throughout the game; I think there were only 5-6 dungeons who were all decent and unique. Everything else looks just like the others. The same goes for its enemy designs, majority are just reskins and resized and there is a miserable lack of diversity in its enemy designs. Regardless, I still enjoyed the game since it managed to maintain the other things I loved including the open world journeys and some classic JRPG tropes. Overall, still a decent game for fans of classic RPG games. Enjoy!
