Shovel Knight - 0:19
Developed and published by Yacht Club Games, is a 2D side-scrolling platform game with an 8-bit graphical style. Some often confuse this game as being a metroidvania but it is technically not a metroidvania due to its linear forward approach. While it does have tons of platforming and certain parts of maps being re-playable each sub level is its own map as part of the bigger map of the world. Nonetheless it is a great game that can loosely fall into this genre because of its classic appeal.

Astlibra Revision - 0:56
Developed by BEIZO and published my Whisper Games, is a 2d action RPG. In this game you are able to explore beautifully detailed & crafted worlds, You will upgrade your skills to defeat enemies and fight brutal boss fights. It does allow for exploration within the major game play areas and allows for upgrading of weapons and does require some abilities to be gained or prior to exploring parts of the map. The exploration is rewarding and challenging.

The Darkest Tales - 1:28
Developed by Trinity Team and published by 101XP, is an action platformer, that is a complex and compelling adventure, full of familiar characters and fairy tale landscapes. Imagine all the adventures you read about in the fairy tales and put them into a distorted land of adventure and challenges that are both exciting and frightening at the same time. The emphasis of this game is the action and platforming but there is a hint of metroidvania as the levels get bigger and you have to explore which route to take and what ability is needed to successfully complete that route.

Tunic - 2:06
Developed by Tunic team and published by Finji, is an action adventure isometric game that is a combination of open world, puzzle adventure and metroidvania elements that is both rewarding and challenging. As a small fox on a big adventure, you will explore a land filled with lost legends, ancient powers and ferocious monsters. As part of the adventure you will rebuild your manual which will reveal maps, tips, special techniques and deeper secrets. Lost is a small bit of what you will experience in this game but the rewards are that much more worth it the deeper you go.

Owlboy - 2:41
Developed and published by D-Pad Studio, is a story driven platform adventure game where you get to fly and explore a world in the clouds, as an owl. It is story rich and obstacle filled. There are monster infested ruins, well kept secrets, large dungeons and challenging boss battles. While it is not genuine metroidvania at its core there is exploration and required abilities that give allow for some varied game play. It does provide some different platforming aspects that make it enticing to play-through. The story and the beautiful pixel graphics are what give it a place on the must play games list.
