Ideally what it comes down to is d&d is collaborative creation and when your choices your character or yourself as a person are devalued by the dm it can be frustrating and lead to a lot of problems down the line. Life is busy and it just seems to get busier as we grow up just remember your time is valuable you are valuable and if you are ever in a situation you are uncomfortable in just leave it you don't have to justify yourself. Everyone is there to have a good time and maybe make some friends but when someone is actively ruining that for you it probably isn't worth your time and maybe you should consider your exit.
