The Nintendo Switch is a marvellous device. The first time you play a game as impressive as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Super Mario Odyssey on a train, you realize just how special it is. Even so, it could use some improvements. The Switch is missing several key functions, not only of its competitors but even of previous Nintendo consoles.

Things like offering a variety of non-game apps. The PS4 and Xbox One are full-fledged multimedia machines, capable of playing songs and videos, displaying photos and providing all kinds of entertainment aside from games. This is one area where the Switch falls flat. And while no one would expect it to be a game-playing powerhouse on the level of the PS4 or Xbox One, it sure would be great if the Switch could play full versions of modern multiplatform games. Instead, we’re stuck with uglier ports that sometimes offer lower frame rates.

And what about the online experience? Why does Nintendo continue to offer lacklustre multiplayer years after Sony and Microsoft built solid online systems? It’s ridiculous. Not to mention the Switch’s poor video capturing features. You can only record gameplay videos on a handful of games, and, even then, it’s limited to 30-second clips that get compressed and blurry when uploaded to Facebook.

Finally, with Nintendo’s long history of incredible game libraries across all its previous platforms, why isn’t the Virtual Console on the Switch? Who wouldn’t love playing through the original Mario trilogy, or Earthbound, or Star Fox 64 on their brand new system?
