6 Missing Wheel Of Time Characters Expected To Return In Season 3

Multiple characters absent from the story can be expected to be on hand when The Wheel of Time returns for season 3. Due to the massive cast of both major and supporting characters, it's not surprising that a few can go long lengths of time without being seen. However, what comes next in the books goes to show that it shouldn't be long for them to re-enter the picture.

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time books notably introduced legions of characters over the course of its 14-volume story. It would have been an impossible task to balance all of them from book to book. Understandably, not everyone could be involved in every installment, meaning many would vanish - sometimes for the entirety of a book or more. Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins has indicated that introductions will be handled differently so that people don't "disappear for seasons." So far, it seems the show has managed the issue much better. For that reason, only a handful of characters missed out on recent entries, and even those shouldn't be missing for long.

Played by Michael McElhatten, Tam al'Thor is the adopted father of Rand. He was severely injured during the Trolloc attack, but not killed. Rand was forced to leave his father and the Two Rivers behind early in season 1 when it was discovered that he or one of his four friends was the Dragon Reborn. Tam was seen again in flashbacks in season 1's penultimate episode, which revealed that he saved a baby Rand on Dragonmount 20 years ago. Tam also had a cameo in season 2, albeit only as part of the test Nynaeve was put through by the Silver Arches. But while it may feel like Tam's relevance to the story has ended, the events of The Shadow Rising suggest otherwise.

It's too early in the story for a reunion with his son, but Tam's return should happen nonetheless, thanks to the story set up for Perrin Aybara. In the book, Perrin heads back to the Two Rivers and gets involved in a conflict with both the Trollocs and the Whitecloaks. This is where Tam comes into play; as a retired - yet highly skilled - Blademaster, Tam has the combat and military experience needed to be a competent ally in the trails facing the Two Rivers folk. As a result, Tam becomes a key player in Perrin's The Shadow Rising arc

The father of Egwene, Bran al'Vere appeared in The Wheel of Time series premiere, sharing a heartfelt moment with Egwene, alongside his wife, Marin. Having survived the Trolloc attack, the al'Vere couple should be around when the story makes its way back to the Two Rivers village. Bran is especially important to this period in the books, given that he's the mayor of the Two Rivers. As a leadership figure, it's ultimately up to him to help rally the Two Rivers folk when the Whitecloaks and Trollocs arrive. Chances are, Perrin will have to rely on Bran quite a bit in The Wheel of Time season 3.

One of the book characters to undergo significant changes for the TV series, Abell Cauthon was the father of Mat and a horse trader. In The Shadow Rising, Abell steps up in a big way, helping Tam, Perrin, and Loial deal with the Whitecloaks and the Trollocs. The amount of time he spends with Perrin and the others in their efforts against their enemies raises questions about what the show's approach to him will be, considering that it elected to make him a despicable character.

The TV version of Abell Cauthon was depicted as a man who openly cheats on his wife and does little to take care of his family. But with the battles at the Two Rivers sure to come in season 3, he'll likely appear regardless. Unfortunately, though, Abell may be less of an ally and more of a hindrance to Perrin and his friends. It's hard to imagine his story being anything akin to what happened in The Shadow Rising, where he was someone Perrin could easily trust.
