Triangle Strategy is a Strategy Role-Playing game co-developed by Square Enix and Art Dink which gets its inspiration to classic SRPG games like the Fire Emblem franchise and Final Fantasy Tactics. The game’s settings focuses at the time of peace on the land of Norzelia thirty (30) years after the so-called Saltiron War which is an event where the three major nations (Glenbrook, Aesfrost and Hyzante) fought against each other for the right of ownership over the ingredient “salt”. You will be mainly following a young Serenoa Wolfort, the heir to the lordship over Wolfort which is one of the three (3) high-houses of the nation of Glenbrook. Due to certain events that would bring forth another war in Norzelia, you will be guiding Serenoa in his decisions and convictions that would alter its outcome. Supporting our main protagonist are various characters that will help him in making his decisions which consists mainly of his loyal retainer Benedict; his childhood best friend Roland; his future betrothed Frederica; his other Wolfort retainers Erador and Anna; Frederica’s mentor and confidant Geela; and Roland’s personal bodyguard Hughette. Will you prioritize your own people’s survival through any means necessary? do what is must for the majority’s sake at the expense of the minority? act for a righteous and just cause despite the consequences? Or let the Scales of Conviction decide for you?

A game which received good Metacritic scores of 83 and 84 in the Nintendo Switch and PC platforms, respectively. Praises were given on its modern take of an established genre by making a satisfying gameplay system where you can make use of environments during battle phases; by having a simple RPG mechanics in its character customization and progression; by having an excellent narrative with interesting characters; and great replayability due to its decision-based Scale of Conviction phases which gives you multiple endings. Anent the criticisms, the pacing of the game was considered a setback since the dialogue sequences takes more time over the game’s other sequences including the exploration and battle sequences. Furthermore, the character dialogues and lack of their character development were noted for being weak.

As for me, this will be one of the best SRPG for me of all-time which includes the likes of the classic Final Fantasy Tactics. Unlike Tactics, this game was much simpler and each character has their differing pros and cons in battle that is well-balanced which makes you think and strategize who to bring to have an efficient victory. I also love its decision-based gameplay and the lot of arcs you can proceed in order to reach one of its four (4) endings. However, I agree with the criticisms of the game’s dialogue sequences which is time-spending. Even then, I like the story and narrative of the game which focuses on war and its impact to different nations and the people as well as the different political principles and beliefs between the major nations in the game. As for the characters, I don’t agree that they had no character development and the voice acting was bad. Playing in the Japanese dub, the voice acting was superb and each actors/actresses were able to convey the different personalities and beliefs of each character in the game. Furthermore, each of their differing views and opinions on the various matters and decision sequences during conversations is great for me. Overall, a really great SRPG which is must-buy for fans of the genre. Enjoy the Walkthrough!!!
