#699 Tekken 3 (PS1) Unplayable characters (1/4): Crow playthrough.
A playthrough of the unplayable character Crow in the PS1 port of Namco's Tekken 3.
As always, we have some unplayable characters to cover. This time however, as opposed to just having a Wild Card we have some legitimately unplayable characters to look at. Indeed, the majority of these are the Tekken Force characters; enemies with limited move sets made specifically for the Tekken Force game mode as regular, generic enemies, like the sort you'd see in a Streets of Rage or Final Fight game.
By hacking the game, you can play as them, and funnily enough they all share one slot, simply being different costumes. What's also funny is that they have different names for their versus screen title cards, yet always have Crow's name during an actual battle.
The Tekken Force characters all have an extremely limited, though surprisingly decent moveset. In fact, they'd be a decent character for new players to try as they'd help them to get to grips with the basic mechanics of the game, and you find yourself thinking more strategically with them when you play as them. What's also rather hilarious is that, on occasion, at the beginning of the match a Tekken Force character will just dropkick the enemy, like some kind of wrestling heel, taking away a considerable chunk of their life as the opponent just lays on the ground in shock at the thing, seemingly thinking "Wait...did that just happen?". This is particularly useful as, with their limited moveset, the Tekken Force characters can be a bit difficult to use before you figure out some of their more useful moves.
The Force characters are actually quite broken thanks to one move in particular; their (df+2) uppercut. This thing is just amazingly, dealing hefty damage, quick recovery and allowing you to combo up to four times easily with it. While also helping you to learn a bit about juggling. I'm surprised there wasn't some kind of training mode with these guys, considering Harada and co. wanted a juggle training mode in this game, but I guess there was only so much you can do.
As with the NPCs in Soul Blade, the Tekken Force characters stand out as some of the most interesting unplayable characters in terms of novelty alone. Sure, they're maybe not as interesting as Night Terror or some such, but as I mentioned in my Jun video a ton of people (including myself) played Tekken 3 to death, and having something new in a game you thought you knew everything about is one of those magical feelings we won't see a whole lot more when it comes to fighting games (or games in general) considering how quickly information leaks or games are datamined nowadays. So, in that way, it's important to appreciate this aspect from the golden age of gaming, while we still have some of these curiosities to cover.
