7 Yuka Mammoth
The prehistoric prime of the woolly mammoth was around 39,000 years ago & the last colony to roam the Earth was traced to Wrangel Island, off the coast of Siberia. It’s believed that they lived there until around 2000 BC. It’s been suggested that beneath Siberia’s permafrost, which is permanently frozen ground, as many as 150 million mammoths might still lie frozen. The Yuka mammoth is often cited as the best preserved mammoth specimen in paleontology. Discovered by Yukaghir tribe members in 2009 & dubbed Yuka in their honor. The mummified muscles & ligaments, the trunk, skin & some of it’s strawberry-blonde fur were all extremely well-preserved, offering new & exciting insight into the species.
6 Yukagir Bison
With a shoulder height that reached 6 feet, the steppe bison also known as Bison priscus must have been a great prize for humans. Two other complete specimens had been discovered before, but this was said to have been in much better condition. It lived around 10,500 years ago according to radiocarbon dating of it’s hair & horn samples. When alive this bison stood 6 feet at the shoulder & weighed around 1,300 pounds. Traces of pollen were found in its stomach, suggesting a diet of wild herbs & grasses. The steppe bison was slightly larger than the American bison with a second bump on its back & bigger horns.
5 Moose
Although not as relevant to science as the rest of the frozen animals on this list, this particular find is remarkable through its rarity. In 2016 two hikers stumbled upon a fascinating natural sight while on a trek near Alsaka’s western coast. They discovered two bull moose frozen mid battle with their antlers interlocked. Bill Samuel, retired biologist at the University of Alberta told National Geographic that ‘he’d never seen anything quite like that before’.
4 Tumat Puppy
A dog belonging to a long extinct canine species was found in an icy grave near the village of Tumat in the Sakha Republic of Russia, in 2015. Found at the site of a suspected ancient human settlement, it’s believed to have been someone’s pet. This sparked conversations regarding cloning & Hwang Woo-Suk, a cloning expert, took an immediate interest. In 2011, another puppy, a three-month-old female was found in the same region.
3 Cave Lions
The Siberian region seems to be a boundless provider of frozen prehistoric wonders. In September 2017, Boris Berezhnov, from Russia’s far northeastern Yukatia region found a cave lion cub. The discovery took place only two years after two other cave lion cubs, named Uyan & Dina were found in the region. Unlike Uyan & Dina, the newly discovered cub was older with grown teeth, which meant scientists could better determine the age. The specimen that’s yet to be named was so well preserved that its facial features & even the toes on its paws were visible. This cub didn’t come from the same litter as it was larger as well as older than Uyan & Dina & found in a different locality.
2 Sasha the Woolly Rhino
Find by businessman Alexander ‘Sasha’ Banderov & his friend Ivanov, in September 2014, Sasha is the first baby wooly rhino discovered. Sasha’s wool was very well preserved & of its head, the nostrils, mouth, one ear & one eye were clearly visible. It wasn’t clear whether it was male or female but it was named after its finder, a name that applies to both genders. Scientists estimate that Sasha was around 7 months old, around 10,000 years ago. Sasha was bigger than expected at that age, with a length of roughly five feet & standing two & a half feet tall, a size that modern African rhinos reach when they’re 18 months old.
1 Maly Lyakhovsky Mammoth
This female woolly mammoth was found frozen in a Siberian ice tomb in May 2013 & it’s one of the best preserved specimens of its kind. Aged between 50 & 60, the theory is that it met its end after getting stuck in a swamp. The specimen was dubbed ‘Buttercup’ & it was found on the Maly Lyakhovsy Island of the New Siberian Islands archipelago. She didn’t go through a cycle of frost & defrost. It most likely fell into the water or got bogged down in the swamp where it remained frozen for thousands of years. Buttercup was found in its ice tomb by a team from Project Mammoth, a Russian-funded research venture. Its discovery could hold great scientific importance towards the project’s ultimate plan of seeing the prehistoric animal roam the Earth once more.
