While we think of games with different endings as being a relatively recent development, it's something which has been going on since the 8-bit era. While some NES games were infamously difficult, achieving certain goals could give you a really rewarding outcome.
If you blasted through CastleVania II: Simon's Quest really quickly without using too many continues, you'd see Dracula just start to come back to life. Maniac Mansion was infamous for it's high price, but legendary for the number of great endings it had, including seeing a meteor get arrested. Duck Hunt's finale was so secret you needed a Game Genie to unlock it, while DuckTales players could go for broke to see Scrooge McDuck finish the game penniless. Contra players had to use a cheat that wasn't the Konami Code to get a hint to a sequel and Ghosts 'n Goblins defined Nintendo Hard, while Metroid's big reveal of Samus Aran is legendary.
