#867 Suggoi Arcana Heart 2 (PS2) Unplayable Character: Mildred playthrough.
A playthrough of the unplayable character Mildred in the PS2 port of Examu’s Arcana Heart 2.
It’s a rare day that I get to be the one to discover something (as far as I'm aware, anyway), but here we are.
For some reason, Mildred’s unplayable appearance in Arcana Heart 2 is surprisingly undocumented. Hell, I almost skipped over it myself, but my curiosity finally got the better of me. And, like with Virtua Fighter 1, there’s few things nicer than going back to a game I thought I knew everything about.
Mildred here, as you can see, is incredibly glitched. She has no portrait, most of her attacks are glitched, but she’s still surprisingly functional. Her homing dashes are actually useful for once, and in general a surprising amount of her character remains. A shocking amount, even, and yet more proof that the Arcana Heart games were simply built on top of one another. Hell, as far as I can tell she actually retains all of her attacks. They all have the same properties they did before,
This video also means we get to see the only instance of Mildred fighting against both Boss Angelia and against Parace L’Sia in a couple of dream-match battles. Man, it is just brilliant. Impossible match-ups are one of the most fun parts of making these videos, and the fact that we can pit a boss from one game against two from its sequel, when it was never supposed to happen, is so damn good.
Things get even weirder, though. I said this game was built on top of the first one, and that gets blindingly obvious when Mildred gets to the bosses of the game…and transforms into her cocooned form from the first game. Yep. Somehow that ended up here as well, and even retains its attacks. Mildred is even forced to transform into it by the game, which isn’t great as both Angelia and Parace are quite speedy bosses, but luckily Mildred’s ranged attacks help to compensate for that. Hell, due to the game engine her moves actually execute more consistently, and can even be set up for certain combos. The fact that I actually get to have a Mildred vs. Parace dream-match is easily the best thing about being able to play as Mildred here. Like, it’s just such a weirdly satisfying feeling to turn the impossible into a reality, especially given how competent Mildred actually is here. Needless to say, I’m pretty chuffed about this discovery.
As for the hows and whys of Mildred is here, I’ll get more into that in later videos. For now, it’s time to finally get onto Arcana Heart 3, and look at one of the single most infamous bosses of all time.
