A playthrough of the exclusive boss Bobby Strong/Bobby Ologun in Atlus’ Shin Power Instinct: Matrimelee/ Shin Goketsuji Ichizoku: Bonnou Kaihou.

This game was a request by the user rasmus degn. Because of course it was.

Also, on this day in 2018 I reached 1600 subscribers. A huge thanks to everyone whose been supporting the channel so far; it’s gone much further than I ever would have thought it would.

This game is a bizarre, half-port, half-sequel to the infamous Neo Geo title Matrimelee. Given that it was never released in the West it has no official title, and so I’ve simply placed a weird portmanteau of the English and Japanese titles to try and make it findable.
This port of Matrimelee is intended to be a slightly remixed, definitive version of the game. All the characters from the arcade title return, and the infamous Sissy is made a hidden character, limited to versus and practice mode. Two other characters, Angela and Kinta, return after being absent from arcade version.

Given that the game has effectively lost its main boss, well, Atlus had to bring in a replacement boss. And what did they decide on? One of the strangest bosses, and boss choices, in existence.

The new final boss is Bobby Strong, a Nigerian MMA fighter. You might be thinking: “wait, this guy seems a little over-developed for a throwaway boss”. Well, there’s the thing. Bobby is actually a hyperbolised version of Nigerian-Japanese comedian Bobby Ologun. The inspiration for this appears to have come from Ologun’s short-lived stint as an MMA fighter, although he doesn’t really utilise any MMA-style moves here. Instead, he’s your full-blown comedian-inspired fighting game character, with all the wackiness and strangeness that usually brings. For another good example of this look up Norimaro in the Japanese version of Marvel vs Street Fighter, who was based on the Japanese comedian Noritake Kinashi.

This series is known for joke bosses, so Bobby’s inclusion here isn’t too surprising. Otane and Oume were grandmas who kicked your ass, Chuck was Ryu crossed with Rugal, and Sissy was a horrifying abominable demon of a boss who lulled you into a false sense of insecurity before destroying you with her insanely broken priority.

Like Sissy, Bobby is only usually available in versus and in practice, but that’s not how I role so fuck that. He was insanely easy to hack, given that the character values go clockwise around the character selection screen, with Bobby being the hidden character value 17 on the selection screen.

Bobby is an extremely simple boss, and in general reminds me a lot of White from Real Bout Special. He has a whopping three special moves; a short-ranged projectile (qcf+P), a more powerful version of that projectile when he runs (while running, qcf+P) and a command grab (hcb, f+P). He also has a few command attacks and a couple of command attacks, along with a multi-hit super combo, and a projectile beam hyper combo. So, yeah, he has like one actual special move. More work was put into sprites than it was into his moveset. It’s one of the most Power Instinct things that Power Instinct could do, so of course they went with it.

His command attacks are pretty noteworthy however, with his running punch attack seeing him attack the enemy with his own arse. Because that’s a staple of every good fighting game, of course. The most hilarious part about that, however, is that he can follow up his butt strike with his running projectile attack, making it an entirely viable strategy. He also has this bizarre knockdown move with a decent reach (HP+HK) where he summons the outline of a neon character and smacks the opponent down, it’s pretty surreal. I forgot to perform it here, but it isn’t that important anyway, and if you’re dying to see it then check out a playthrough of the game as you’ll be able to see it there.
