This game already came out on the Nintendo Switch back in 2023. I still need to get this but let me tell you, I'm hyped to doing this game. So yep, welcome to 9 Years of Shadows.
This game centers on Europa, a young woman who struggles to survive in a world devoid of life. After nearly dying at the hands of a demonic force, she is saved by a strange creature named Apino. Apino restores not only color to her but the area around. Europa teams up with Apino in the hopes of getting the strength needed to deal with this demonic evil.
9 Years of Shadows is a Metroidvania in every sense of the word. I mean that literally. What makes this game really unique is that you have access to both a close and long range style. Close range is all Europa and her moves are good. Long is for Apino. He's useful for destroying certain enemies and objects.
There's a drawback. Your healthbar also doubles as a gauge you use for Apino to shoot light projectiles. You need to micromanage this because if it runs out, you need to either take enemies out to refill it or embrace Apino to refill it. Also bear in mind that if your gauge is empty and you take two hits, you're done. Game over. This adds another level of strategy to a game like this where every move counts. Seriously. It makes it exciting.
There are upgrades and abilities you can get as you progress and they'll be of major help. This game is awesome and if you haven't tried it, you will and should.
