As much as the Alien Ethereal command may want field whole UFO'a full of their nasty new toys, they are as limited as Germany was during the 2nd world War whenever they developed a new tank - the old models were plentiful and the new modal were expensive and difficult to have en mass. Guess they'll just have to work with what they have on hand.
