In each level, you start with 99 bullets and you shoot the bullets by pressing ABXY in that direction. You'll pass the level if you reach the target score; if you didn't reach it even in a boss battle, the game's over. If you get hit, you'll lose points and a bullet until you run out. At that point, all you can do is survive.
