Hats are used halfway through the stage until the last point where they are necessary (1:56).
At this point there is also a trick that allows you to give all your hats and badges to the first ninja and not get them back until you either die or complete the chapter, because the ninja is stuck behind the door. The 1-hit hero badge remains in effect, but all others (including hookshot) become unusable.

This entire run is done in one take with no editing. Dying at any point after giving away your hats will return them to you. The hat you had last equipped can be seen during the cutscene after the first fight, but then it disappears again for the remainder of the chapter.

The final fight is, unfortunately, the only fight that doesn't award you the One Punch achievement. I tested this as I used the badge during my blind chapter 5 playthrough. I still highly recommend you to use this badge at least in the final fight, as it makes it much more exciting and you are not INVULNERABLE DURING THE BEST PART (the final phase)

I warmly recommend this game to everyone who might be interested in it.
