A new species of giant water lily with leaves exceeding 3 meters has been discovered in the Royal Botanic Garden of Kew, England.
According to the BBC's report, a new water lily species has been detected in the Kew Royal Botanic Garden, which went undetected for about 177 years.
The giant water lily, which could not be noticed because it was officially recorded under another name, was named "Victoria Boliviana" because of its origin in the Amazon river system.
CAN GROW MORE THAN 3 METERS
Scientists state that the new species, whose leaves can grow more than 3 meters, blooms only at night.
Carlos Magdalena, one of the world's leading water lily experts, said that they carried out the study and discovered the new species because they suspected that the plant was different from the other two known giant species, "Victoria Amazonica" and "Victoria Cruziana".
Details of the research have been published in the journal Plant Biology.
