A plea (rant) to indie devs: AI voice overs ruin the game
It's happened a few times to many in the last couple of months that I stumbled over AI-generated voice overs and even though I usually am pretty fine with indie devs trying out tools to create their games and making them more accessible, from having awful translations to questionable AI imagery, I have to say that most AI voice overs that are supposed to emulate human beings reacting like human beings absolutely wrecked my enjoyment and immersion.
I get how hard it is to develop a game, there are so many different variables to consider, from gameplay to visuals to story and pacing but for the love of god, let the player read or have some friends do a voice over, nothing can be as bad as the fake and often irritatingly muted emotions of a robot voice pretending to be a human.
This is also a plea to respect creative skill sets such as voice acting but also writing, translation (yes, it is a creative skill) and design because even though these tools can make all these areas of game development easier, they can't replace actual professionals.
