A Questionnaire-based Evaluation of the Awareness of Local Anaesthetics Usage and Toxicity among Surgical Specialists
Layman Abstract: Local anesthesia (LA) is commonly used to numb specific parts of the body during surgeries, especially with the rise of same-day (daycare) procedures. While it has made surgeries safer and less painful, using too much of it or giving it incorrectly can lead to a serious condition called Local Anaesthetic Systemic Toxicity (LAST). This condition can cause dangerous symptoms like seizures and heart problems. It can be treated with a special medication called Intralipid, but only if recognized in time.
This study aimed to see how much surgeons know about the safe use of local anesthetics and how well they understand LAST. A survey with 10 questions was given to surgeons from teaching hospitals and private clinics across different specialties like general surgery, orthopedics, ENT, and obstetrics.
The results showed that most surgeons lacked key knowledgeβmany didnβt know the safe doses of anesthetics, how to monitor patients properly, how to recognize the early signs of LAST, or how to treat it. Very few knew that using ultrasound during nerve blocks can reduce the amount of drug needed and increase safety.
In conclusion, the study highlights a serious gap in awareness and training among surgeons about the risks of local anesthetics. This calls for better education and guidelines to ensure patient safety during surgeries.

π©Ί Local Anaesthetic Systemic Toxicity (LAST): Are Surgeons Aware Enough? | Eye-Opening Study Findings
In this video, we dive into a crucial yet often overlooked topic in surgical practice β Local Anaesthetic Systemic Toxicity (LAST). Despite the growing use of local anaesthesia in modern, minimally invasive surgeries, there is a concerning lack of awareness among surgeons about the safe usage of these drugs and how to recognize and treat LAST.
π What You'll Learn:
β
What is LAST and why itβs dangerous
β
Common symptoms and how it progresses
β
The importance of Intralipid therapy in treatment
β
Survey results from teaching and private surgeons
β
Why ultrasound guidance can reduce risks
β
Key recommendations for safer practice
π This video is based on a cross-sectional study conducted among surgeons from general surgery, orthopedics, ENT, and obstetrics, highlighting critical gaps in knowledge and training.
β οΈ Only 3β5% of surgeons were aware of how ultrasound can help reduce the dose of local anesthetic needed!
π― Whether you're a medical professional, student, or curious viewer, this video sheds light on an essential topic that can save lives when recognized in time.
